Nutrition
- Your mouth is happiest and healthiest when your Saliva is at a pH level of 5.5
- Saliva has buffered elements that neutralize acid and promote tooth re- mineralization
- A simple can of pop (even diet pop) can drop your pH level as low as 2.7 and a single can of coke contains 9.64 teaspoons of sugar which will turn to acid lowering your pH level even further.
- Even if you are not a pop drinker be on the lookout for sports drinks, wine, energy drinks and fruit drinks which are also high in sugar and acid.- The bacteria found in plaque loves sugar just as much as you do.
- Sticky sugary snacks such as fruit roll ups, gummy bears and tootsie rolls are problematic due to the fact your saliva has a harder time washing them away.
- The longer acid has to work with your teeth the greater chance of tooth decay.
- Try to consume sugary or acidic food and drink only during a meal because your saliva will be at your maximum quantity and flow rate.- Limit between meal snacking, but if you need to snack try to eat vegetables, nuts or even buttered popcorn.
- Acid needs time to work on enamel so if you are consuming sugary drinks try and finish them quickly or through a straw to reduce exposure to your teeth.
- Avoid food or drinks high in sugar or acid before bed, your saliva production is at its lowest when you’re sleeping.
- To protect your teeth bush them with a fluoride paste and chew gum that contains xylitol.
- Ideally, brush and floss your teeth every time you eat or drink, but at a minimum, 2x a day: in the morning, and before bed. Visit your dentist regularly. The ADA recommends every six months.
