Sealants
Dental caries (tooth decay or cavities) often occur on the chewing surfaces of our back teeth. Our office can provide a service called Sealants which will help prevent or reduce the amount of decay in an adolescences mouth.
What is a Sealant?
A sealant is a clear shaded plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where tooth decay most frequently occurs. This sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the cavity prone areas of the teeth from decay!
When teeth are developing, they may have small, deep grooves, or pits in the enamel. They are impossible to keep clean because the bristles of a toothbrush can not reach into them. This makes the grooves an ideal place for food and bacteria to collect, causing tooth decay.
Although children receive a significant benefit from sealants, adults can also be at risk for pit and fissure decay. Our staff can evaluate and advise you on the benefits of sealants in your mouth.
