Root Canal
Root canals are tiny passageways that branch off from beneath the top of the tooth, until they reach the tip of the root, in which the nerve of the tooth lives. All teeth have between one and four root canals.
Many tooth problems involve infections that spread to the inner chamber of the tooth containing blood vessels, nerves and other tissues. When the infection becomes worse, it can begin affecting the nerve. A traumatic injury to a tooth can also compromise the tooth causing toothaches and similar problems.
A diseased nerve can bring a host of problems; pain and sensitivity are some of the first indications of a problem; but inside, a spreading infection will lead to an abscess.
Root canal therapy is has a very high rate of success, and involves removing the diseased tissue, infection and restoring the healthy portion of the tooth. In fact, root canal therapy is designed to save a problem tooth; the only other alternative for treating a diseased tooth is an extraction.
Nothing is as good as your natural tooth!
- Saving your natural tooth should always be your first choice when dental care is needed. Nothing can truly replace your natural tooth.
- If your dentist recommends extracting your tooth, ask if you can save it with a root canal. This endodontic treatment removes nerve of your tooth and fills and seals the space.
- Your tooth can function just like any other tooth for the rest of your life, ensuring comfortable chewing and a natural appearance.
- Endodontists can often save most severely injured teeth.
- If your tooth cannot be saved, you may consider replacements such as a bridge or dental implant. Your options may depend upon the condition of surrounding teeth and bone structure.
- Do everything possible to save your teeth before considering extraction. Nothing is as good as your natural tooth!
